Are you stumped on what to wear for your engagement session? You are definitely not alone. The wonderful thing about engagement photos is that you can incorporate them into your wedding information, such as your website or save the date cards!

Engagement sessions are so unique, because you get to relax and hang out with your wedding photographer on a more laid back setting.

There are a lot of things to consider when considering your engagement photo outfits because honestly...the options are endless! Lights or Darks? Casual, Dressy or themed? Bold or Neutral tones? How do you pick outfits you’re going to love now and forever??

Follow these 10 tips on what to wear to help you make your decision!

#1: Wear clothes that reflect your personality

Don’t go outside the box if that’s not you. Experts agree this is a mistake. Why? Your engagement shoot is a reflection of both of your personalities and your relationship as a couple. Don’t dress up in cocktail attire if you’re the couple who likes to sit on the couch and watch football. Don’t dress like something you’re not! When you embrace who you are as a couple, photos turn out so much better, because you’re comfortable and relaxed.

#2: Complement each other, but don’t match

Complement your partner, don’t match. (Both of you should not wear black shirts and white jeans) Even patterns don’t show up too well in photos. Try to stay away from anything too busy as it can be distracting in photos and can take the focus away from you.

#3: Pastels, cool tones, neutral colors

You don’t want your neon green shirt to SCREAM out of the photo! The focus is supposed to be on your faces and the love between you both. To avoid standing out like a bright sign, try cool pastel colors or something neutral-toned to keep the focus on you and NOT that neon sign coming off your body!

#4: Wear something you feel comfortable in

Not only should you wear something you FEEL comfortable in, of course, but you should also pick something that makes you feel your best. Make sure whatever you’re wearing makes you feel like a million dollars and gives you confidence. Try to accentuate or feature the body part you like the best, whether that’s wearing a sapphire blue shirt to match your bright blue eyes, creating an hourglass figure by wearing a waist-cinching belt, or showing off your slender ankles by wearing cropped off jeans!

#5: Stick with 2 outfits max

These are photos you’re going to remember forever, so make sure you have a couple outfits max to have some variety in your photos. Especially depending on your background/landscape, you may need 2 different outfits to make yourselves pop out from the background!

#6: Tie everything together with a color scheme

You don’t want your whole album to be a jumbled collage of blues and whites. When you decide what colors you want to wear, make sure your partner wears something with the same color scheme when you switch outfits. That way you’re not too over-matchy.

#7: Incorporate at least one accessory

Something as simple as a shiny necklace or colored bracelet will help make your photos pop! If you’re shooting purposely on a rainy day, bring an umbrella, obviously, and use that as a prop. Or even a fancy hat can accentuate your personalities and bring those out in a photo.

#8: Don’t be afraid to wear bright colors!

Not both of you! And this is not for everyone. One person can wear a bright shirt, while the other is wearing a neutral colored shirt/pants. You don’t want to overwhelm the final image so much that you blend in with the background. Always make sure you’re not too matchy-matchy and complement each other’s colors.

#9: Consider the season

People can tell if you didn’t plan for a summer shoot if you’re out there in a fur coat. Plan for the weather. Plan for the season. Prepare for the engagement shoot several weeks in advance.

#10: Consider the landscape

This may come obvious, but you’re going to look out of place wearing high heels and a black dress if you’re doing a woodsy-outdoorsy shoot. Save that outfit for an urban city life shoot. If you’re doing a beach shoot, pick out some summery hues that will make you stand out against the sand and water. If you have a busy background, pick something neutral that will bring back the focus to you, instead of the busy-ness behind you.
